Waldo L. Semon
Has anyone ever heard of Waldo Lonsbury Semon? While doing some research on another individual I stumbled upon Waldo.
Semon was born in Demopolis, Alabama on September 10, 1898. His family moved to Washington state when he was seven years old. He received his BS degree in Chemistry and his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington. Semon taught college for awhile, worked for B.F. Goodrich before dedicating his time being an inventor. He has 116 U.S. and 100 foreign patents to his credit. His most famous patent is vinyl. Yea folks we all owe Waldo for our credit cards, garden hoses, food wrap, plastic bottles and computers. He also developed a synthetic chewing gum that could blow huge bubbles, but Goodrich thought it was not marketable.
Semon was elected to the Inventors Hall of Fame 1n 1995 at the age of 97. He died in a nursing home in Hudson, Ohio on May 26, 1999 at the age of 100.
Another famous person from Demopolis lost in history that many of us had never heard of.
